The single most common question in bootlacing has a simple answer once you know your eyelet count. Here is how to get the length right the first time.
Buy a beautiful pair of laces in the wrong length and they will either whip around like loose rope or barely reach the top of your boots. The good news: lace length follows a predictable pattern based on how many pairs of eyelets your footwear has. Count the eyelets up one side, match that number to the chart below, and you will land in the right range nearly every time.
Quick lace length chart by eyelet pairs
Use this as your starting point. Counts assume standard criss-cross lacing with a little length to spare for a confident double knot.
| Lace length | Eyelet pairs | Typical footwear |
|---|---|---|
| 27" | 2–3 | Low shoes, derbies, short chukkas |
| 33" | 3–4 | Dress shoes, low boots, sneakers |
| 48" | 5–6 | Mid boots, classic work boots |
| 54" | 6–7 | Work boots, service boots |
| 60" | 7–8 | Taller work and hiking boots |
| 68–72" | 8–10 | Tall boots, boots with speed hooks |
| 108" | 10+ / hooks | Logger, lineman, and packer boots |
Two things shift the numbers: speed hooks and combination eyelet-and-hook setups eat up more lace than flat eyelets, so size up if your boots use them. And if you prefer a chunky bar-lace or a decorative knot, give yourself an extra length too.
How to measure if you are unsure
If your current laces fit the way you like, the easiest method is to simply pull one out and measure it end to end (tip to tip). Match that measurement to the closest size above. If you are between two lengths, the longer option is almost always the safer pick.
Counting eyelets the right way
Count the holes (or hooks) up one side of the boot, not both. A boot with seven holes on the left and seven on the right is a "7 eyelet pair" boot, which points you to roughly a 60" lace.
Length by lacing scenario
Short shoes and low boots (27" – 33")
Dress shoes, derbies, and low sneakers rarely need more than three or four eyelet pairs. Our 27" round cord waxed laces and 33" round cord waxed laces are sized exactly for this range, with a slim 3Â mm cord that suits finer footwear.
Classic work and service boots (48" – 60")
This is the heart of the boot world. Five to eight eyelet pairs covers most Goodyear-welted work boots and service boots. The 48" round braided, 54" round braided, and 60" round cord laces all live here.
Tall boots and speed hooks (68" – 72")
Once a boot climbs past eight eyelet pairs or adds speed hooks, you want a 68" to 72" lace. Leather laces are especially popular at this height. See the 72" Italian round cord leather laces or the rugged 72" rawhide leather laces.
Logger, lineman, and packer boots (108")
The tallest boots demand a true long lace. Our 108" rawhide leather laces are built for that job, with enough length to wrap, hook, and double-knot a tall boot securely.
Specific Boots: What Length They Take
The eyelet chart above works for almost everything. But some popular boots have details worth knowing before you order.
| Boot | Eyelets | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Wing Iron Ranger | 6 | 54" | Stock runs 48". 54" is the right replacement size. |
| Red Wing Beckman | 5 | 54" | Caution: Beckman eyelets are smaller. Wide, braided, or bulky laces will not thread through. Use Skinny Flat or Thin Round only. |
| Red Wing Moc Toe | 6 | 54" | Standard 6-eyelet work boot sizing. |
| Wolverine 1000 Mile | 7 | 54"–60" | 54" standard fit. 60" for those who prefer a longer knot. |
| Thursday Captain | 7 | 54"–60" | 54" standard; 60" if you prefer more knot length. |
| Thursday Duke | 7 + 2 hooks | 60" | Speed hooks consume extra lace. Size up to 60". |
| Truman Boots | 7-8 | 60"-72" | 7 eyelets: 60". 8 eyelets or hooks: 72". |
| White's Semi-Dress | 9 + hooks | 72" | Leather laces are the traditional choice. Rawhide alum-tanned recommended. |
| Nick's / Wesco / Logger | 10+ | 108" | Tall logger boots need the full 108" rawhide lace. |

Frequently asked questions
What length laces do I need for 8 eyelet boots?
For eight pairs of eyelets, a 60" lace is the usual sweet spot. If your boots also have speed hooks at the top, step up to 68" or 72".
Are boot laces measured by total length or by eyelet count?
Laces are sold by total length (tip to tip), but you choose that length based on your eyelet pair count. The chart above translates one to the other.
What if I am between two lace lengths?
Choose the longer length. Extra lace tucks neatly into your knot, while a lace that is too short cannot be salvaged.
Do round and flat laces use different lengths?
The length guidance is the same, but flat laces can sit slightly differently in the eyelets. When in doubt, size up by one length for flat laces on tall boots.
